The method

What REM is

Racial Esoteric Moralization. The preface calls it a lens: a way of seeing that can be pointed at almost anything, because almost everything is culture. This page is the lens in plain speech. The proofs are in the book.

The claim

The book does not treat myth as a dream the people had together. Campbell, as they describe him, maps the unconscious. They reverse that. The myths that last were designed. A priestly class set them into a people. What begins as a fable, the preface says, becomes a fact.

The first worked case is Genesis 30. Jacob will take the speckled sheep. He peels branches, sets them where the flock drinks, and the young are born streaked. The volume reads the sheep as people and the branches as culture. Whatever holds the eye governs breeding. That is the sentence they want remembered.

Art, on this account, is a mating song. It proposes a moral type and a desired mate: fair and open, like Apollo, or concealed and dark, like Vulcan or Yahweh. They argue the effect is strongest on women, as choosers. Parenting and the old neighborhood slow the process. They do not stop it.

Words they use

In the cinema

Films the volume actually names. A line here is a pointer, not the chapter. If a plot is not in the pages already read, it is not invented below.

How to use it

  1. Read Groundwork first. The later parts assume the names.
  2. When a parenthesis appears, such as (I, §3), go to that part and chapter. The book is built to be crossed.
  3. In a film, ask who is desired, who is fair, who is hidden, and which name keeps returning. Then check whether the book already made that move, before you make it yourself.
  4. Do not treat every villain as the same code. The volume says that habit blinds the reader.
