Applications
Where the lens is used
The preface says REM is applied here to Biblical and popular examples, and that it is begging to be applied further. What follows is only the uses volume I actually makes. A line is a reader’s note, not the chapter.
01 · Scripture
The parable as a breeding manual
The first application is Genesis, not a film. Jacob’s peeled branches, Esau’s stolen birthright, and the sons of Noah are read as peoples and as instructions. A story that looks moral is treated as a technique.
02 · Names
A repeated name is a mark
Dan, in Genesis, is the serpent who strikes from hiding. The book then finds Dan, Danny, and Dani in The Shining, The Karate Kid, and Midsommar, and says each is coded. The same move is made with Milesius and the Tuatha Dé Danann: a medieval Irish name is pulled back toward Apollo, Miletus, and the tribe of Dan.
03 · Comics
Stan Lee as the ethic of the craft
Lee is called the ethic of REM in the comic medium. A deleted scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is read as the makers talking about their own hidden work: the father’s secret reaches only the one person who can unlock it, and “the Osborns” are taken as a name for Aryan adversaries, after Henry Fairfield Osborn. Marvel and DC writers from Siegel and Finger through Claremont are listed as practitioners.
04 · Film, made on purpose
True JEM
Symbols placed by someone who knows the code. Star Wars is their case that a Gentile myth gains coherence when a collaborator who knows the code arrives: Kasdan, Luke as “light,” Vader as the dark father. Sunset Boulevard is their case that a studio picture can be a twilight of solar idols. Rosemary’s Baby is their case that Typhon and Saturn are still in use: Sapirstein as “stone dear to Saturn,” Tannis as Tanis.
05 · Film, copied
De facto JEM
The sensibility without the skill. Once the code sets the pace of the industry, later writers match it to get the work distributed. The book calls the clumsy recasting of the 2020s — a Black Little Mermaid, Rey as Skywalker — a dull copy of a message older films had already sent under a veil. Complaining about “woke” and asking for the old Hollywood, they say, misses that the classics were already the message.
06 · The room itself
The theater as a temple
Part III treats the movie house as the successor of the opera and of Wagner’s attempt at a new rite. Plato’s cave is read as a forecast of that room: shadows, music from nowhere, a people facing a wall. The application is not only what the story says. It is that the building gathers a crowd and forms it.
07 · What they leave open
Politics, and whatever comes next
The preface says the lens can be pointed at almost anything, and that this volume is the foundation, not the last use. Contemporary politics and “synthetic opposition” are reserved for The Caduceus. A passing remark treats machine-written media as a place the same craft could be programmed in. Neither is worked here.
The method, in shorter form, is on REM. Current writing is at Alexandria. The older applications, under Brahmin’s own 2022 caution, are at The Apollonian Transmission.
